At Breakthrough Wichita, individuals experiencing homelessness or mental illness find support, connection, and opportunities to live healthier, fuller lives.
Challenge
Mental health and homelessness services must be accessible 24/7 to individuals in crisis—people who may have limited internet access, older smartphones, cognitive challenges from substance use or mental illness, or no technical literacy. Traditional nonprofit websites focus on donor cultivation and volunteer recruitment, often neglecting the most important audience: people who desperately need help. Breakthrough Wichita needed their website to serve as a digital lifeline that works for everyone, regardless of device, connection speed, or ability.
Solution
Designed accessibility-first platform meeting WCAG 2.1 AA compliance with screen reader optimization, keyboard navigation, high contrast modes, and simple language. Built progressive web app working on 3G connections and older Android devices common among populations experiencing homelessness. Implemented crisis resource directory with one-click access to emergency services, shelter availability, hotlines, and immediate support—prioritizing speed over aesthetics in crisis pathways. Created streamlined donation and volunteer systems making community support frictionless.
