Overview

At Wichita Repertory Theater (ICTRep), we set out to create a digital stage that mirrors the passion and drama of live theater. As the Lead Developer, I spearheaded the development of a vibrant online platform at ictrep.org to connect theater enthusiasts, showcase upcoming productions like 'Silent Sky,' and foster a sense of community in Wichita and beyond. Our mission was clear: to make theater accessible to all, giving voice to local artists and empowering audiences to engage with the arts in meaningful ways.

This project wasn’t just about building a website; it was about creating a movement around the transformative power of storytelling. By blending modern web technologies with a human-centered design approach, we built bridges that connect diverse audiences to the magic of live performances. Every pixel and line of code was crafted with the purpose of inspiring and inviting people into the world of ICTRep, where 'Dramatically Good!' isn’t just a tagline—it’s a promise.

From ticket bookings to behind-the-scenes content, the platform serves as a digital extension of the theater experience. We championed accessibility for all users, ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability or background, could join the conversation and celebrate the arts together.

Challenge

The primary challenge was to translate the visceral, emotional experience of live theater into a digital format without losing its soul. ICTRep needed a platform that could not only inform and sell tickets but also evoke the same passion and connection that audiences feel in the theater, all while serving a diverse community with varying technical and accessibility needs.

Additionally, we faced the hurdle of integrating multiple technologies into a seamless user experience while maintaining fast load times and reliability. Balancing aesthetic richness with performance was critical to ensure we didn’t alienate users who might be accessing the site on slower connections or older devices.

Solution

My approach was to lead with purpose, designing a solution that prioritized community and accessibility while leveraging a robust tech stack including WordPress, Vue, Angular, jQuery, and Next.js. We created a dynamic, visually captivating website that mirrors the drama of ICTRep’s productions, featuring rich imagery and intuitive navigation to draw users into the world of theater. Custom components were developed to showcase productions like 'Silent Sky,' with interactive elements that fostered connections between audiences and artists.

To address performance and accessibility, I implemented optimized assets and Cloudflare-powered hosting to achieve lightning-fast load times under 2 seconds. We adhered to WCAG 2.1 AA standards, ensuring screen reader compatibility and an inclusive experience for all users. Every design decision was rooted in empathy, ensuring that the platform served as a welcoming digital theater for everyone.

Collaboration with the ICTRep team was key. By aligning on their vision of 'Dramatically Good!' experiences, we built features like streamlined ticket purchasing and engaging content hubs, empowering the theater to grow its reach and impact. The result was a digital space that not only informs but inspires, turning casual visitors into passionate supporters of the arts.

Results

Since the launch of the revamped ictrep.org, Wichita Repertory Theater has seen a surge in online engagement, with increased ticket sales and community interaction, though exact figures are still being compiled. The platform has become a vital tool in giving voice to local talent and building a stronger, more connected theater community in Wichita, with users praising the ease of access to show information and tickets.

The site’s performance metrics speak for themselves, maintaining a 99.9% uptime and page load times under 2 seconds, ensuring that no one misses a moment of the drama. This project stands as a testament to how technology, when paired with purpose, can create movements that resonate far beyond the stage.
